Thats a great question. There is assistance. I work for a website for people who are caring for their parents and this company just called me to tell me about their service that looks for local benefits in different areas to find you the most inexpensive way to fix your parents houses.

It seems like it may be too expensive for some people, $199 flat time fee....but apparently if they don't find anything for you, you get the money back. It might be worth it in the long run $199 compared to hundreds of dollars it could save you.

I'm interested in hearing how someone's experience is and if the program and services they are offering actually works! Here is the site: http://adisource.com/

Also, what you're speaking of would classify as Aging in Place. Although, your concern isn't making sure that they can stay mobile in their home and home modifications...you could present it this way when speaking to anyone about assistance. Check out this site for Aging in Place: http://www.ageinplace.org/

Our site, http://www.agingcare.com/, also has articles on this and may help you out with any other care needs that you have. Good luck to you!!!
References :
http://www.agingcare.com/

My husband volunteers for Rebuilding together, which used to be called Christmas in July..call them and tell them what you need..these people do repairs for the elderly and those people that don't have enough money to hire their own repairs..If it is beyond their capabilities, they might be able to refer you to someone that can help..
References :
Some cities have federal grants to provide low cost loans to seniors to do home repairs. Some have the provision that if they stay in the home for 10 years after getting the loan it will be foregiven.
You can also check to see if there is some local organization like Rebuilding Together which will do major home repairs once a year using volunteer contractors.
References :
I doubt that any government program would pay for such an expensive job. However, you might get assistance from your local builders' group. They have been known to donate material, expertise, and their labor to help out a needy family. I would check to see if there is such an organization in your area. Best of luck--
References :
There are programs that can help elderly people maintain and repair their homes, (government and private programs). Fixing the foundation is a very big job, though. That amount of funding may or may not be available through the programs in your area, you'll need to to some research, ask around, to find out. Most programs and services are operated on a State or Local basis, and programs differ depending on the State or County, so it isn't possible to give you a precise answer.

Check with your local Area Agency on Aging to find out what programs are available in your area. This website has links and contact information for Local Area Agencies on Aging:
Eldercare Locator
http://www.eldercare.gov/Eldercare.NET/Public/Home.aspx

You also might try your searching your local United Way Information and Referral Service. This is a good source for finding services available in your Community.
You can try dialing 2-1-1 from the area where your in-laws live. If that doesn't work then try this website:
United Way, Get Connected to Essential Community Resources, 2-1-1
http://www.liveunited.org/211/

Do your in-laws have a mortgage on their home or is it paid off? Have they considered maybe a reverse mortgage to get the funds needed to do the repairs? The reverse mortgage would need to be paid off after they pass on, but at least they could stay in their home safely. Could they afford a home equity loan? Could anyone in the family help them make payments on a equity loan or second mortgage?

I hope things work out, I think you are very nice to help search for solutions!
References :
First check with your local town govt. Some have grants just for this or even have low interest loans for improvements. They could get a regular loan on the house and contact a good local contractors. This will be their busy time so allow them to work when they have fewer obligations to see if they can charge less.
References :
Check the Wood Workers of America, and the tax incentive the Administration offers for improving your home. Also call your Chamber of Commerce for any way to help.
References :
Your city of county should have assistance programs to help your in-laws fix severe problems and spruce the house up. Contact city offices for the appropriate phone numbers.
